Red Hat, Inc. is an American multinational software company that provides open-source software products to enterprises. Founded in 1993, Red Hat has its corporate headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, with other offices worldwide. It became a subsidiary of IBM on July 9, 2019. Red Hat has become associated to a large extent with its enterprise operating system Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

A disappointed former user shares his thoughts on g2.com, "We found that with Red Hat we were having to compile too much software that we could get pre-packaged using a debian/Ubuntu distribution. Support, while very good, did cost more than from Canonical. Automated patching was not easy or straightforward for us without significant work and customization. There are some specialized packages, especially dealing with image and pdf conversions, which are much easier to install and keep up to date on debain based operating systems. We found that this ease of updating was more important to us in many cases than the other benefits Red Hat provides."

"If you like working on a team, you won't like working here. For bragging about being open and collaborative, this place is the most isolating work environment I've ever been apart of. It is all lip service. Few employees actually like helping or sharing, they just feel obligated to and you can feel it."

"Terrible pay. Very toxic culture. Rampant sexism. Rampant racism. Rampant ageism. Unrepentant favoritism often crossing into nepotistic territory. Associate managers all seem to lack both experience and humanity. Managers are clueless and proud of it, they love to rubber stamp anything a fellow manager says. Communication failures between all levels of management are so consistent that meetings discussing anything in the company feel schizophrenic. Sexual harassment from male and female managers is so prevalent and intentionally unaddressed it is alarming. Terminally un-inclusive. If you are a woman or person of color, get ready to be marginalized and overlooked. High levels of attrition. Zero time is provided for training and professional development. HR will side with management 100% of the time and tell employees point blank that only a managers word matters. Unless you happen to be on one of the two or three teams with managers who can walk and chew gum simultaneously, do not expect meaningful performance reviews. Management openly mocks employees when they think no one is listening. Employees are harshly critiqued if they point out problems or issues but do not also supply the immediate fix to management. Management habitually lies about their concerns for everyone’s work-life balance. Many managers and associate managers are in meetings from the moment they walk in the door until the end of day, preventing any management from actually occurring. It’s a “do your job and your managers job and some of your colleagues jobs too for good measure” sort of place to work. Untruthful management. Inconsistent management. Costly misguided pet projects that waste employees time and ultimately produce no viable product are the norm. What was important last week will like not be important next week and employees will be punished for not anticipating the changes. Budget freezes and undisclosed overruns will affect employees salaries repeatedly. Salary actions are abysmal, almost humorously so. Frequent management advances mean employees get to have a revolving door of mostly inexperienced and unqualified associate managers throughout their career. Merit is not appreciated or recommend. Red Hat kool-aid must be consumed or there ARE repercussions. Hyper-cliquey. People with inconvenient health conditions will be fired. Performance is actually irrelevant, but how an employee is perceived is paramount. All of an employees knowledge and good will absolutely will be abused by most managers. Career advancement is time locked, rather than taking ability into the equation at all. Hard work and dedication are ignored."

"If you are a women, this is one of the worst companies to work for, specially in Engineering. A few good women in Engineering left because of many unfair practices and boys club atmosphere. Terribly incompetent management. Mediocre benefits, low pay compared to competition. Many open source projects they work on have no goals. Open organization is a marketing sham. Product Management has no idea what customers want. Engineers make up requirements as they have no feedback. Promotions take for ever. And there is lot of politics. No growth at all."

Profess much about about open culture, meritocracy, and how different they are and at the end of the day keep to their own secret sub cultures and fiefdoms, practice heavy handed politics, get their staff to drink the Kool Aid, and wind up being worse than the big business cultures they criticized for so long. It's ironic and it's Karma they've been acquired by Big Blue."

"Management is poor and it's a very secretive society. They do not communicate important information with other department members. Be very careful if you are reaching an age considered "old". You will soon start receiving contrived reviews that will eventually warrant a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) and dismissal from the company is 100% imminent no matter what your past reviews or company performance has been in the past."

"Old boys club, very few women in management and they are treated VERY poorly. One Senior Director had 5 formal complaints against him and is still employed. I was told by HR that unless you submit a written complaint, they take zero action against complaints lodged by phone, other than "speaking with" the subject of the complaint."

"Terrible experience. Non-competent folks are made managers which result of management techniques of 30 years ago. You are not only micromanaged but also bullied constantly. Nepotism in the UK organisation is rising. The so-called opensource culture is a thing of past."

"Worked there for several months during a summer season. Never knew when we were done (there were some 18 hour days without overtime), management was not willing to accommodate any kind of needs or time off requests. Your scheduled days off could be revoked in less then 24 hours if they wanted you to work. Had an unnecessarily complex system for signing in and out. often required two fingerprint scans at separate machines.At least the produce was from Canadian growersNever knew when you were done for the day. Management was terrible."

"Well, I have sucessfully Provide Hardware, Network, Support to various clients of Redhat Infocom. Company was run by Delhi Fellows in unprofessional manner. Co-worker few were professional , rest all are unprofessional. Cleverly Solved various issues virus , network problem, desktop harware and application porblems, Server File and Internet Sharing. Outlook configration, sykpe , tally , ms-office, lan cable & wirless. Field vist - visting diffrent company and peoples and shorting out their problems were most enjoyable."

"There are many great people at Red Hat. Unfortunately I ended up with a nasty condescending manager with very little technical background in security. He hired me as a cloud security & deployment engineer then pulled a bait and switch on me and gave me an auditor's job. He then rated my performance on the new role he gave me with no previous audit experience. It was a disaster working for him. I never got to perform the role I interviewed for at Red Hat. So buyer beware."

"The Red Hat company culture is like a religion. They constantly talk about Open Source like it is the only option for software development and hate any other business models. I have worked in many technology companies in the past and never seen any company disparage their customers and competition as much as Red Hat. They believe they are the only option a customer has for any software and talk about how stupid their (and competitor's) customers are. Red Hat believes OSS is the source of all innovation despite that fact that Open Source is just a way to commoditize real innovation done elsewhere. The company has never had a fresh product idea ever they just jump in front of any Open Source project that seems to be picking up steam. Internally they are stale and unwelcoming to any new ideas that are brought forth. Many of the employees are long timers and cannot understand new processes or productivity increasing technology that others new folks might bring up. Overall it is a company that wants validation of it's approach and process even if it's proven to be broken. Back stabbing, whining and corporate politics are the rule. Be forwarned. It's like 'the Witch's Candy House in Hansel and Gretel' Looks great on the outside but before you know it you're in the oven.Lot's of expenses by employees on lunches, dinners, drinks etc. for themselvesbackstabbing culture, unlimited complaining, squash any good ideas from new team, Management is exceptionally underhanded, poor attitude towards employees, describe their own customers as stupid"

"I worked this company from ground zero experience. The company was just started after 2004 and no one knows what linux was back in days but smartest people in industry was around. They were very young and live atmosphere but they do not invest to people and facility so salary was bear bottom and life was miserable. Call center managers who worked in BPO must not be allowed to work in such a good company."

"Very stressful environment which has been made worse with the IBM buyout. It is also a middle-aged boys club with not many females. The people are generally quite friendly and supportive of each other, but the management are probably the worst I have come across and some are bullies and micromanage. Office is horrible, does not function and very outdated as they will not spend any money. Technology is backwards and also very outdated. Pay is not good in comparison with competitors and bonus scheme promised when commencing is very misleading. No working from home unless you have a great and flexible manager.Nice peopleMost of it. Pay is low and workload very high and long hours."
